The Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu , has called for multi-level policing system to take the country out of the security challenge it is facing .
The governor, who also emphasised that state police had become more necessary , spoke during Christian service on Sunday in commemoration of the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at St . Benedict Military Catholic Church , Owena Cantonment of the Nigerian Army , Akure , on Sunday .
Akeredolu added that there was the need for more provision of modern equipment for the military to boost the fight against insurgents and other criminals .
He said, “ Better ammunition and welfare of the security agencies must continue to be at the forefront to encourage the officers in their fight against criminalities .”
The governor added that the Nigerian military ’s counter- terrorism efforts aimed at ridding the country and the state of criminal elements was laudable .
The Brigade Commander of the 32 Artillery Bridage, Brigadier Gen . Zakari Abubakar, said the command recognized and valued the continued supports and encouragement of the governor , urging him to continue supporting the army.
Kidnapped pastor’ ll soon be freed, says Lalong
Also, during a church service to mark the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Plateau State at the Church of Christ in Nations, Jos , Governor Simon Lalong , said the Federal Government was working to ensure the release of Pastor Lawrence Zongo from Boko Haram captivity .
Zongo , a pastor with COCIN had been held for more than three months after he was abducted on October 19 , 2020 .
The kidnapped pastor was on his way a ministers ’ conference in Gombe State when he was abducted by Boko Haram insurgents .
He said, “ On the issue of our brother Rev . Polycarp Zongo who has been in captivity for months now , I want us to keep hope alive and never give up . The state , as well as the Federal Government , is working with the church to ensure that he regains his freedom .”
The governor noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces of Nigeria were still actively engaged in internal security operations in Plateau State and around the country , fighting insurgency , kidnapping and other crimes .
The governor added , “ The security agencies have challenges of manpower, logistics; we need to join hands with them by passing accurate and timely information to them . ”
Do more for armed forces – Wike
Similarly , the Rivers State Governor , Nyesom Wike , on Sunday urged the Federal Government to do more for Nigerian Armed Forces for their roles in ensuring that the civil populace enjoyed a peaceful country .
Wike stated this at the inter -denominational church service in Port Harcourt to mark the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day .
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Media , Kelvin Ebiri , in a statement quoted Wike as saying , “ We must have a special recognition for our fallen heroes and to those who are still in the armed forces fighting . See what is going one in Borno and Yobe states and all over the country ; banditry , insurgencies .
“ So, for us, we think that the government should come up with something concrete that when they go out and fight , their families will know that there is something their parents have kept that will cater for their children .”
Insecurity avoidable in Nigeria, says Diri
Also, the Bayelsa State Governor , Douye Diri , said on Sunday at a service to mark the 2021 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House , that insecurity and violence in Nigeria was caused by perpetration of injustice and lack of equity in the country .
Diri said the ugly situation would have been avoidable if the leaders of the country respected the rule of law and justice .
Diri , who salued the ex – servicemen for their sacrifices , said , “ For me , it is a day to call upon the federal and state governments to ensure that as leaders our watchword should be that of justice and equity .
“ Much of the insurrection , the violence and the conflicts in Nigeria today are avoidable if only we respect justice and equity .
“ The Federal Government is spending so much but we believe that they can still spend more in terms of equipment and better welfare for the personnel .”
