Osinbajo rules out break-up, admits current time most challenging

The Vice President , Prof . Yemi Osinbajo , has said despite security challenges that have stretched the security agencies to the limit and COVID – 19 pandemic, the All Progressives Congress remains the best party to solve Nigeria’ s problems .
Osinbajo said this shortly after he flagged off the APC membership registration / revalidation exercise in Ogun State.
In a statement from his office titled , ‘ State of the nation : There will be evidence that justice prevails – Osinbajo , ” the Vice President was quoted as saying lending support for the creation of state police just as he said governments at all levels must ensure justice for victims of crime .
He said , “ Although we are in government at one of the most challenging times in history , we are not unaware of the plight of the people and we are determined to ensure justice for all .
“ We must ensure the prosecution of all those who have been arrested for kidnapping, banditry and all other forms of criminality . There must be evidence that justice is being done . This is achievable by stronger collaboration between the police , states Ministries of Justice and the Federal Ministry of Justice .
“ With the new Service Chiefs , we have a fresh set of eyes, intellect , and skills and a fresh look at strategies against the insurgency in the North East , as well as banditry and kidnapping elsewhere. In this new approach much , greater emphasis is being placed on technology for surveillance , intelligence gathering and attack .
“ We must put in place a state police Structure . In the meantime , we must speed up and strengthen the community policing structures , and states must continually train , educate and formalise their local security structures so that they complement the federal law enforcement agencies.
“ We must resist any attempts to destroy the unity of this country . Our people have lived and worked together for decades. While we must attend to the cries of communities for justice , equity and fairness we can do so within this same union . Ultimately we are stronger together than apart. ”
Osinbajo who was accompanied by the Niger State governor and the National Chairman of the APC Registration and Revalidation Committee , Abubakar Sani Bello , was received at the Mayflower Secondary School, Ikenne by the Ogun State Governor , Dapo Abiodun , a former governor of Ogun State , Olusegun Osoba , the Southwest Team Leader of the Committee , Senator Lawan Shuaib and other top members of the party.
He headed straight to Ward 1 , Unit 3 , Egunrege Poling Unit , Ikenne, where his membership was revalidated by the ward chairman , Segun Awomuti .
Osinbajo also appealed for support for the President , Major General, Muhammadu Buhari ( retd .) .
Speaking at the event, the State governor , Dapo Abiodun , commended Osinbajo and President Buhari for going back to their respective wards to revalidate their membership of the APC .
Speaking on behalf of other members of the APC registration team , Senator Lawan Shuaib said, “ APC will adopt certain reforms through the exercise . If they suspend you at the ward level , you stand suspended. This is to give the party back to the people . ”
The National Chairman of the APC Registration and Revalidation Committee and Niger State governor , Abubakar Sani Bello , said since 2014 when the party held a similar exercise , the party had lost some members and gained more members , hence , the imperative of the 2021 exercise .
Former governor of Ogun state , Aremo Olusegun Osoba , described Osinbajo ’s revalidation of his membership of the APC at his ward in Ikenne , as historic.
He said Ikenne is the home of progenitor of progressive politics in Nigeria , the late Obafemi Awolowo .
‘ Exercise not meant to edge out anyone’
In Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State Governor , Dr Kayode Fayemi , dispelled speculations that the exercise was designed to edge some people out of the party.
Fayemi who spoke at his Ogilolo Ward 11 , Unit 09 , Isan Ekiti in the Oye Council area of Ekiti State , said , “ The revalidation and registration exercise is an opportunity for us to get a reliable database about our members and beyond that , we have tried to register APC in the minds of the people . ”
Party stalwarts speak on exercise
The Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume , who revalidated his membership in his ward, in Wannune , urged party supporters to conduct themselves peacefully .
Gombe State Governor , Inuwa Yahaya who was the only person whose APC membership was revalidated in the state , as at the time of filing this report , expressed fears that a shortage of registration materials may mar the exercise in the state.
Borno State APC Caretaker Chairman , Ali Dalori , in an interview with one of our correspondents in Maiduguri said , “ The governors have teamed up and came out with a single position which is making it difficult for any individual or group of politicians to break them , except when there is a disagreement amongst them . ”
Cross River State APC Caretaker Chairman , Senator Matthew Mbu, debunked allegations that the exercise was part of a plot by the party to rig the 2023 elections.
The Membership / Revalidation Committee Chairman for Oyo State , Ahmad Sajoh , while speaking in Ibadan , on Tuesday , explained that the party was moving ahead despite misgivings by a few individuals about the exercise .
In response to a question on concerns raised by the former interim national chairman of the APC , Chief Bisi Akande about the exercise , Sajoh said , “ We are in the digital age . If some people want to remain in an analogue age , they are free to remain where they are.”
Materials arrive late in Kwara
Late arrival of materials delayed the take off of exercise in two Local Government Areas of Kwara State .
Although reports from across 14 local government councils indicated that the exercise started peacefully , the same could not be said of Edu and Patigi local government areas.
Chairman of APC in Lafiagi Ward 1 , Muhammed Hassan explained that party officials were still awaiting the arrival of materials to begin but that with the reality on ground the exercise was likely going to start on Wednesday .
Minor hitches in Lagos
In Lagos , the exercise took off on a peaceful note except for minor logistics challenges .
The state APC spokesperson , Seye Oladejo, said , “ The registration started around the same time in the various wards and polling units across the state .
“ There might be some teething problems , but in the next few days , they should be resolved . The issues were basically logistics and deployment of human and material resources .”
The state governor , Mr Babajide Sanwo – Olu , revalidated his membership of the APC , saying the exercise would strengthen the APC toward becoming Africa ’s largest political platform
The governor, who did the revalidation at Ward E 3 at St . Stephen School compound , Adeniji Adele , in the Okepopo area of the state , added , “ My message for all of us is to go out to our relevant polling units , wards and local governments and do our registration and revalidation .”
